Ventilation is key to control pollution and moisture in a home. But, what do you do in winter when you want fresh air and opening the windows could jack up your heating bill? Install a heat recovery ventilator, of course!
Some heating systems have filters that help with some contaminants, but they don't filter all contaminants, remove moisture or allow fresh air in. You may have fans in certain areas of the home, such a the kitchen, bathroom and laundry. While these fans can remove moisture and pollutants, they do create a vacuum that sucks in more contaminated air. (This can also allow more radon into the home, if radon is already an issue.) The best option is a heat recovery ventilator which will remove moisture and bring in warm, fresh air. The ventilator is able to take most of the heat from the outgoing stale air and transfer it to the incoming fresh air, so this is more cost effective than opening a window in winter.
